Member of Parliament Thamer Mazhoud told Tunisienumerique that an additional amendment will be presented this Tuesday during the plenary session dedicated to voting on the 2026 Finance Bill. This amendment, submitted jointly with several other MPs, aims to establish a Fund for Environmental Justice and Sustainable Development.
Addressing decades of environmental inequality
According to Mazhoud, the proposal stems from growing awareness of the lack of environmental justice in several regions of the country, particularly in the governorate of Gabes.
“We have been living for 50 years with a tragedy of severe environmental disparities. Gabes has suffered from continuous environmental injustice for decades,” he said.
Mazhoud explained that the proposed fund would have clear missions: reducing environmental imbalances, preventing the State and polluting institutions from evading their responsibilities, and financing efforts to compensate regions affected by pollution.
He added that the fund would also help promote development in these areas and improve health and social infrastructure.
Financed by 1% of the profits of industrial and extractive companies
The MP stated that the fund would be financed through a 1% levy on the profits of extractive, manufacturing and industrial companies, whether public or private. Additional contributions from the State budget may also be allocated.
Mazhoud stressed that the initiators of the amendment prefer the fund to have administrative and financial autonomy to ensure greater efficiency and transparency in its interventions.
