5.1-magnitude earthquake off Calabria prompts suspension of rail services

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded off the coast of Calabria in southern Italy. In a statement released today, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) said the epicentre was located at sea, at a depth of 65 kilometres, about 65 kilometres from the city of Reggio Calabria.

The tremor was strongly felt in Sicily. However, fire brigade operations centres reported no requests for assistance and no reports of casualties or damage to buildings. As a precaution, rail traffic in Calabria was suspended, with delays and cancellations possible.

For his part, the head of Calabria’s regional civil protection agency, “Domenico Costarella”, confirmed that the strong quake, which struck at dawn along the region’s south-eastern coastline, caused no damage to property and no injuries, according to initial assessments.
