Veterinary expert Ahmed Ben Rejeb warned, in a statement to Tunisie Numérique, about the persistence of tuberculosis in Tunisia and the risks linked to consuming unpasteurized dairy products.
He explained that tuberculosis exists in two main forms: pulmonary and lymphatic. In the latter case, around 80% of infections originate from cattle.
Tunisia has recently recorded 1,480 tuberculosis cases, approximately 1,200 of which are linked to bovine sources, highlighting the need for strict livestock monitoring and dairy safety controls.
Transmission mainly occurs through the consumption of raw milk and non-sterilized dairy products. The expert urged consumers to purchase only from trusted suppliers who comply with sanitary regulations, warning that informal sales significantly increase the risk of disease spread.
Farmers are also advised to remain vigilant in order to safeguard livestock health and, by extension, protect the country’s food sovereignty.
Practical advice: prioritize pasteurized milk and dairy products processed under controlled sanitary conditions to protect public health and your family’s well-being.
