A 6.1-magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday morning on the Greek island of Crete, at a depth of 13 kilometers, as reported by both the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was announced to be southeast of the island’s most populous city, Heraklion, 7 kilometers north of the village of Thrapsano.
According to a statement given to Skai TV by the mayor of neighboring Arkalohori village, “two churches and other buildings at the village had been damaged and two people were trapped, one in a church when the dome collapsed during maintenance work, and another in a home.” It is currently reported that the earthquake has caused a number of evacuations and at least one death.
