7.1-magnitude earthquake hits Japan’s Hyuga-Nada Sea

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale occurred in the Hyuga-Nada Sea, off the eastern coast of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu, at a depth of 30 kilometers, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported on Thursday. The quake was initially estimated at a magnitude of 6.9.

The quake’s epicenter was registered 103 kilometers east of Kagoshima city, with a population of 555,000, and 26 kilometers away from Miyazaki, home to 311,000 inhabitants.

Following the tremor, the agency issued a tsunami warning for Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures.
