9 Algerian cities in TOP 10 hottest in world

On June 12, 2024, Algerian cities encountered extreme heat that propelled two of them to the top ranks of the hottest cities globally. This event was a stark indicator of the intensifying heatwaves seizing the region and garnered significant attention worldwide. However, the situation was exacerbated by June 29, 2024, as the record-breaking heat persisted, with more Algerian cities ranking among the hottest places on Earth.

No less than 9 cities in the country have been classified among the hottest on Earth, with temperatures that hit 50°C and sometimes even surpass them, an unrelenting sun and a burning air that sets fire to the lungs. 9 Algerian wilayas in the TOP 10 hottest places on the planet, this has never occurred. And global warming, which is increasing, will certainly not help things.

The specialized site OGIMET has established the following classification:

  • Ouargla (wilaya of Ouargla): 50.1°C
  • Hassi-Messaoud (wilaya of Ouargla): 49.7°C
  • Adrar (wilaya of Adrar): 49.0°C
  • Timimoun (wilayade Timimoun): 49.0°C
  • Touggourt (wilaya of Touggourt): 48.9°C
  • In-Salah (wilaya of In Salah): 48.4°C
  • Rhourd Nouss (wilaya of Ouargla): 48.3°C
  • Krechba (wilaya of Ghardaia): 47.4°C
  • El Golea (wilaya of El Meniaa): 47.3°C

The new record marked by Algerian cities on June 29 is the logical continuation of the figures recorded in the first days of summer. Ouargla with its peak of 50.1°C is a few lengths, barely 6°C, from the absolute world record, held by Furnace Creek, in Death Valley in California. Remember that this record has been held since July 10, 1913, with a scorching temperature of 56.7°C.

Yesterday, Sunday June 30, the heat struck again, with 10 Algerian cities in the TOP 15 hottest in the world, according to Eldorado Weather. Ouargla still occupies first position with 50.1°C, then comes Hassi-Messaoud (49.7°C), then Adrar (49°C), Timimoun (49°C) and Touggourt (48.9°C). Voice the TOP 15 in the world:

  • Ouargla: 50.1°C
  • Hassi-Messaoud: 49.7°C
  • Adrar: 49°C
  • Timimoun: 49°C
  • Touggourt: 48.9°C
  • In-Salah: 48.4°C
  • Rhourd Nouss: 48.3°C
  • Ahwaz (Iran): 47.4°C
  • Krechba: 47.4°C
  • El Golea: 47.3°C
  • Safi-Abad Dezful (Iran): 47.3°C
  • Omidieh (Iran): 47.1°C
  • Ghardaia: 47°C
  • Nokkundi (Pakistan): 47°C
  • Kuwait Internationalairport (Kuwait): 46.9°C

The intensity of the extreme heat anticipated in the Algerian Sahara and the south, and particularly their frequency and duration, are grave reasons for concern for the authorities and the populations. The health of the most vulnerable groups, the risk of fires and increased pressure on water resources are the major concerns in regions where these problems are recurrent.
