Addis Ababa : Tunisia Calls for a New Approach to the Africa–Italy Partnership

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to supporting the partnership between the African continent and Italy.

He stressed that this stance reflects Tunis’s backing for all initiatives launched by Africa’s partners to strengthen cooperation, solidarity and shared interests, built on mutual respect and trust. He also called for moving beyond traditional cooperation mechanisms in favour of a sustainable, balanced and mutually beneficial partnership model—one that promotes development, stability and shared prosperity.

Speaking on Friday—on behalf of the President of the Republic—during the second Africa–Italy Summit held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, Nafti reiterated African countries’ expectations for stronger support to help them tackle both longstanding and emerging challenges, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In Tunisia’s address at the summit, Nafti welcomed the Italian government’s decision to convert a significant portion of African countries’ debt into local development projects in key sectors, notably education, vocational training, renewable energy, and food and water security.

He also underscored the importance of the summit as an opportunity to assess the “Mattei Plan” for Africa, listen to African countries’ views, review progress achieved and define priorities and the next working arrangements to ensure the initiative’s continued development, the statement added.
