Just four days after Achraf Hakimi’s serious injury with Paris Saint-Germain against Bayern Munich, the Moroccan national team has been dealt another worrying blow: defender Nayef Aguerd, who plays for Olympique de Marseille, was injured late in the match against Brest on Saturday at the Vélodrome Stadium.
His coach, Roberto De Zerbi, announced that the player is suffering from pubalgia, an injury that requires rest, casting doubt on his participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place this winter in Morocco.
Bad news keeps piling up for Walid Regragui, Morocco’s head coach, who is enduring an exceptionally tough week. On Wednesday night, he likely lost his best player and team captain, Achraf Hakimi, who was the victim of a brutal tackle from behind by Luis Diaz during the Champions League clash between PSG and Bayern Munich.
Medical examinations revealed a severe sprain to his left ankle, leaving his participation in the AFCON (from December 21 to January 18) in serious doubt, with an expected recovery period of six to eight weeks.
As if that weren’t enough, the Atlas Lions, who are preparing to host the Africa Cup of Nations starting December 21, are now facing renewed anxiety following Nayef Aguerd’s injury. The defensive mainstay (57 caps – 2 goals) was forced to leave the field in the 79th minute of the Ligue 1 match between Marseille and Brest (3–0) on Saturday at the Vélodrome.
The updates shared by Roberto De Zerbi after the game were far from reassuring:
“He felt it was getting worse and will undergo further tests. He needs to rest for a while; otherwise, the injury could worsen. He might miss the Africa Cup of Nations.”
