The most astonishing progression is marked by a client of Algeria whose significance is increasing, Europe; demand for alternative LNG has exploded there since the 27 states of the European Union closed the door to Russian gas. Algeria, very close geographically to the old continent, is the major beneficiary of these upheavals with a 12% jump in exports to Europe compared to 2023.
Algerian LNG exports increased to 3.01 million tonnes between January and March 2024, compared to 2.91 million tonnes during the first quarter of 2023. In January 2024 exports increased to 1.04 million tonnes, a slight change compared to December 2023 (0.96 million tonnes) and a slight drop compared to January 2023 (1.13 million tonnes).
The largest importers of Algerian LNG remain Turkey, France, Italy, Spain and Thailand. Algiers can calmly look to the future thanks to long-term sales agreements signed with giants such as Botas in Turkey and Eni in Italy. Algeria is banking more than ever on the expansion of its gas infrastructure to grow export capacities to Europe.
Despite a slight decrease compared to previous quarters, the figures for Algeria for the first quarter of 2024 demonstrate the rise in power in Europe. With a market share of 9.9% on the old continent, Algeria places itself as a reliable supplier on which Europeans can count.
