Algeria- President Abdelmadjid Tebboune Pardons Protest Movement Activists

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday announced his first pardon for members of the demonstration movement that overthrew Abdelaziz Bouteflika last year, the presidency stated.
Tebboune has already asked protesters to opt for dialogue and pledged reconciliation measures to guarantee stability in the OPEC member and gas-exporting country.
He has also outlined amendments to the constitution to expand freedoms and give Parliament a more prominent role. A referendum on the amendments is due to be held this year.
The pardon, which marks the 58th anniversary of Algerian independence, included six activists serving verdicts for charges including threatening national unity. Several other members of the protest movement, known as Hirak, have been in detention.
