In Algeria, the services of the Prime Minister of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Prime Minister Sifi Grieb, said he had informed members of the Algerian government of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to support the domestic livestock market ahead of Eid al-Adha by importing one million sheep. To that end, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries has been tasked with immediately launching the necessary procedures to implement the President’s decision.
Algeria had already imported, in March 2025, one million head of livestock in anticipation of Eid al-Adha. At the time, cooperation was established with specialized public associations and cooperatives across the wilayas to sell sheep intended for sacrifice, in coordination with the bodies and institutions authorized to handle distribution and marketing.
Moreover, Algeria experienced a wave of drought in 2025 that hit wilayas known for sheep farming, driving up red meat prices, with the kilogram estimated at $20.
