Algeria: Project Announced for 1,400 MW Power Plant in Tunisia

Speaking to Algerian media, Minister of Equipment and Housing, who is also overseeing the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy, Salah Zouari announced, on the sidelines of his participation in the second ministerial meeting of energy ministers from the countries partnering in the “SouthH2” Southern Hydrogen Corridor project, held on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in Algiers, plans to build a 1,400 MW power generation plant in Tunisia. The investment amount will be determined at a later stage.

Salah Zouari added that it had been agreed that a technical delegation would travel to Algeria to examine the various details related to the implementation of the project, following the decision to move ahead with its construction as soon as possible.

It is worth recalling that in May 2026, Fayçal Tarifa, CEO of the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG), discussed with Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal, a proposal to build a 1,400 MW combined-cycle power plant in Tunisia.

A plant with a capacity of 1,400 MW would represent a significant addition to Tunisia’s electricity system.

National electricity generation rose by 6% as of the end of July 2026, reaching 12,333 GWh (including renewable self-generation), compared with 11,632 GWh at the end of July 2025.

Electricity generation for the domestic market increased by 5%. As a result, electricity purchases, primarily from Algeria, covered 10% of domestic market demand as of the end of July 2026.
