Algeria Unveils “Dates for Sheep” Feed: A Patented Innovation Turning Date Waste into an Alternative to Imported Maize

Algeria’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced on Wednesday the successful production of a new livestock feed designed for sheep. The product, called “Dates for Sheep”, is derived from the optimized use of date-processing residues, transforming what is normally agricultural waste into a valuable feed resource.

According to the ministry’s statement, the innovation was developed by the Scientific and Technical Research Center for Arid Regions in Biskra. The project is part of a broader initiative to promote applied scientific research in the agricultural sector, aiming to fatten sheep and improve meat quality.

The ministry expressed its appreciation for the achievement delivered by Algerian expertise and thanked key partners involved in the project, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, the Ministry of Industry, Sonelgaz, and local authorities in the Biskra province.

During its meeting held the same day, the government reviewed a presentation on the newly developed product, noting that the patented feed could provide a practical alternative to imported feed maize, potentially reducing reliance on foreign supplies and supporting domestic livestock production.
