Voter turnout up
Mohamed Charfi, President of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE), revealed that the turnout rate for the Algerian presidential elections of September 7 reached 48.03%.
This figure represents a notable increase compared to the 2019 elections when turnout was 41.14% in Algeria and 9.69% abroad. The participation of Algerians in the diaspora further improved, reaching 19.57%.
Extension of the poll and delay of results
The delay in the announcement of the turnout rate is due to unfavourable weather conditions that impacted the transmission of results from the regions of Béchar, in the southwest of the country, and Tamanrasset, in the Great South of Algeria.
The polling stations closed their doors after a one-hour extension of the poll, following requests from several regions to allow more citizens to vote.
Results expected soon
ANIE intends to disclose the preliminary results of the election in the coming hours. Nearly 24 million voters were called to the polls to choose between three candidates: incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the independent candidate; Youcef Aouchiche, secretary general of the Front of Socialist Forces; and Abdelali Hassani Cherif, president of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP).
