Having qualified for the quarter-finals after a mixed group stage, Algeria will not continue its run in this Arab Nations Cup and will therefore not face neighbouring Morocco in the semi-finals next Monday.
At Al-Bayt Stadium in Al-Khor on Friday evening, in the quarter-final, Algeria’s “Fennecs” were held to a 1–1 draw before losing on penalties (1–1, 7–6 on penalties) to their counterparts from the United Arab Emirates.
The shootout sent the UAE through to their first semi-final, following a campaign highlighted by a benchmark performance against Egypt, held to a 1–1 draw, before a crucial win over Kuwait.
The goals were scored by Adil Boulbina (46’) and Bruno (64’). For the record, the other semi-final on the same day will pit Jordan against Saudi Arabia.
