Argentina : Why Messi’s No. 10 Shirt Cannot Be Retired

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) would not be able to permanently retire the iconic No. 10 shirt worn by Lionel Messi after the end of his international career because of FIFA regulations governing its competitions, according to talkSPORT.

According to the British media outlet, rules requiring players to wear designated squad numbers in certain international competitions would prevent Argentina from leaving the No. 10 shirt permanently vacant. Messi wore the number for many years with the Argentine national team.

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi is also set to be honoured in Argentina, with an official farewell match announced for October 6, 2026, at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires against Benin.

The match is expected to take place in the presence of the Argentine star’s family and close friends, during an evening dedicated to honouring one of the most prominent players in the history of the Albiceleste.
