On Thursday, Japan confirmed that it had conducted joint air exercises with US forces in a show of strength following China–Russia patrols, against a backdrop of heightened tensions between the two Asian powers.
Over the Sea of Japan, two B-52 bombers from the US Air Force and six Japanese fighter jets carried out military manoeuvres and a show of force in response to joint Russian–Chinese patrols around Japan and South Korea.
Tokyo, for its part, said it was determined not to allow any unilateral change to the status quo by force, while the American side stated: “Our commitment to our Japanese ally is ironclad.”
Since the new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, suggested that Tokyo could intervene in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan, Russian–Chinese exercises have been conducted around Japan and South Korea.
This has prompted the Japanese and South Korean militaries to scramble fighter jets on an emergency basis.
