At least ten people lost their lives in the fire that broke out in the Jardines de Villafranca retirement home in Zaragoza’s municipality Villafranca de Ebro, the Aragonese regional government told the media on Friday.
The local fire department managed to contain the blaze after being alerted of the incident at about 5:00 am local time. Municipality head Volga Rodriguez said the fire likely started in one of the bedrooms, where it caught a mattress, but noted the investigation is still pending.
At the time the accident occurred, 82 residents were present at the retirement home.
