At least 276 injured after strong Iran earthquake

A powerful 5.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the northwestern part of Iran early on Wednesday near the border with Azerbaijan and Armenia, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The shake’s epicentre was located about eight kilometres from the town of Khowy in Iran’s West Azerbaijan province at a depth of 15 kilometres. Witnesses reported moderate-to-strong shaking with light building damage in the areas closest to the epicentre, per the USGS.

At least 276 people were wounded, with 68 of them hospitalized due to minor injuries, Khowy’s Medical Emergency Service was cited as saying by the Iranian state television.
