Axios: U.S. sends military reinforcements, strike on Iran still under consideration

The U.S. news website Axios reported, citing American sources, that the U.S. military is deploying additional forces to the region in preparation for a possible strike on Iran, should President Donald Trump give the order. The report also said that the head of Israel’s intelligence agency, the Mossad, David Barnea, is currently holding talks in Washington on the Iranian file.

According to U.S. officials quoted by Axios, the military option remains on the table if Tehran resumes what they described as the killing of protesters. The outlet also cited Israeli officials as saying that, despite some delays, a U.S. military strike against Iran could still take place in the coming days.

One Israeli source said the current U.S. plan includes attacks on Iranian security forces, but that Israel does not believe these measures would be strong enough to significantly destabilize the regime. In a related development, another Israeli source confirmed that Mossad chief David Barnea arrived in the United States on Friday morning for high-level discussions on the situation in Iran.

Axios also noted that the Israeli government is concerned that Iran could use nuclear negotiations to buy time and ease U.S. pressure. However, some officials believe the current crisis might push Tehran to make concessions it had previously rejected, particularly regarding its nuclear program, missile capabilities, and regional allies.

As tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated in recent days following U.S. threats of military action, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff said that what he called “killings and executions” in Iran had stopped. In an interview with the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, he stated that “Trump alone has the power to make people submit,” according to his remarks.

Witkoff added that the U.S. president had issued direct warnings to Iranian leaders, saying: “We contacted them yesterday about our concerns over mass killings and executions.”

On Thursday, Axios also reported, citing five informed American, Israeli and Arab sources, that President Trump had postponed a potential strike on Iran while the White House conducts internal consultations and discussions with allies on the timing of any operation and whether it could destabilize the Iranian regime.
