Barbados replaces Queen Elizabeth II with president

Barbados has officially become a republic after swearing-in Governor-General Dame Sandra Mason as its first-ever president.

The inauguration, attended by the United Kingdom’s Prince Charles, has formally removed British Queen Elizabeth II as the island country’s head of state.

Mason was nominated to the position in September by Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley and in October, with two-third of the votes, the nation’s parliament elected her president.
