The president of the Local Union of Agriculture and Maritime Fishing of Béni Khaled, Bachir Ounallah, issued an urgent call concerning the plight of rabbit breeders in the region during an interview with Tunisie Numérique.
According to Aounallah, a severe health problem has struck the rabbits, leading to the death of many animals.
Our speaker explained that the illness in question is linked to high blood pressure in rabbits, which causes serious haemorrhages and ultimately leads to their death.
During his field visits, he remarked a significant mortality rate on farms, with a daily loss of 7 to 20 rabbits.
According to him, this situation causes considerable losses for small farmers, especially since the prices of animal feed are high.
