After a difficult October marked by severe water stress, many are wondering:
Have the recent rains truly improved dam levels in Tunisia?
According to water resources expert Houcine Rhili, the latest rainfall episodes have indeed brought significant relief.
Life-saving rains after a critical October
Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, Rhili explained that «important and beneficial» rainfall was recorded during the last week of November and the first week of December.
These rains were concentrated in the North-West, where most of Tunisia’s major dams are located — a factor that amplified their positive impact.
51 million m³ added: A valuable boost
Based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rhili confirmed that 51 million cubic meters of water were added to the reservoirs over this period.
He described the volume as “significant”, especially after October’s severe deficit.
Water reserves reach 200 million m³
Current estimates place Tunisia’s total dam reserves at around 200 million cubic meters.
While still below seasonal averages, this level marks a meaningful improvement for early winter.
Rhili added that dam filling rates stand between 28% and 29%, noting:
“We are still below normal levels, but this percentage is crucial to begin the season of major crops.”
