Bizerte: seizure and destruction of a tuberculous calf at the Menzel Bourguiba municipal slaughterhouse

    Veterinary services in Menzel Bourguiba carried out, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, the seizure and destruction of a slaughtered calf infected with tuberculosis, following its discovery during a routine inspection at the city’s municipal slaughterhouse.

    Discovery during a routine veterinary inspection

    According to available information, the infected animal was detected by veterinary inspection teams during a regular control operation aimed at verifying the sanitary safety of meat intended for human consumption.

    This intervention forms part of periodic health monitoring missions conducted at slaughter facilities to prevent any risk to public health.

    Coordinated intervention by local authorities

    Following the discovery, Menzel Bourguiba municipal services, in coordination with the national security district, the municipal police, and the relevant competent services, intervened immediately.

    The infected calf was seized and destroyed in accordance with applicable procedures, in order to protect consumer health and prevent the spread of animal-borne diseases, according to information reported by the Tunisie Numérique correspondent in the Bizerte region.

    Ongoing sanitary monitoring to protect public health

    Authorities stressed that this action is part of a continuous monitoring process carried out by veterinary services to ensure meat safety, detect zoonotic diseases, and safeguard public health in markets and slaughterhouses.

    They also highlighted the importance of strict compliance with hygiene and inspection standards to maintain food safety and reinforce public confidence in official distribution channels.
