Real Madrid announced on Tuesday that Brazilian winger Rodrygo will miss the remainder of the season, as well as the World Cup, after suffering a right knee ligament rupture during his side’s 1–0 defeat to Getafe in La Liga.
The 25-year-old Brazil international had only just returned from a muscle injury that had sidelined him for more than a month, coming on in the 54th minute of Monday’s match.
In the 66th minute, as he tried to accelerate down the left flank, Rodrygo’s leg gave way as he attempted to pick up speed.
The player immediately showed signs of pain and briefly collapsed on the pitch, before going on to finish the match.
In a statement, Real Madrid said: “Following tests carried out today by the club’s medical staff on our player Rodrygo, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament and a tear of the lateral meniscus in his right knee.”
