Breaking News: Agreement Reached Between Young Tunisian Doctors and Authorities

An agreement was signed on Wednesday between the Tunisian Organization of Young Doctors and the relevant government authorities, bringing an end to a period of heightened tensions that had threatened to paralyze the country’s public health sector. The announcement was made through an official statement posted on the organization’s Facebook page.

According to representatives of the organization, the agreement represents a significant step forward, with the authorities agreeing to meet several of the demands raised by young doctors. While the full details of the accord have not yet been made public, the statement refers to a “favorable response to a substantial number of requests.”

The Tunisian Organization of Young Doctors expressed its appreciation to the Ministry for what it described as a “positive response,” emphasizing that the resolution has helped avert a “major crisis” in a sector already under severe strain. The organization also praised the commitment and perseverance of its members throughout the protest movement.

“We thank all young doctors for their unwavering efforts during this mobilization, as well as our fellow citizens, esteemed professors, mediators, and all those who contributed to the success of our movement,” the statement read.

The protest movement, dubbed Harak Meremdna by some of its participants, had brought public attention to the growing hardships faced by young doctors—whether still in training or at the start of their careers—including poor working conditions, inadequate pay, and lack of formal recognition.

This positive resolution comes at a time when Tunisia’s healthcare system is grappling with numerous challenges, ranging from shortages in medical staff and the increasing emigration of health professionals, to the urgent need for structural reform.
