Breastfeeding in Tunisia: only 17% of infants exclusively breastfed, specialists warn (video)

The Tunisian Association of Neonatal Medicine organised the third regional day on breastfeeding this Thursday, November 13, 2025, in partnership with the Hanan Association for the Promotion of Breastfeeding, the Tunisian Midwives Association, and under the supervision of the Regional Health Directorate in Sfax.

The event brought together health professionals, specialists, and civil society organisations around a common goal: strengthening awareness of the importance of breastfeeding for the health of newborns and their mothers.

Breastfeeding, a key factor in child health

During her address, Nadia Hmida Hentati, professor of paediatrics and head of the neonatology department at Hedi Chaker University Hospital, stressed the crucial role of breastfeeding in supporting growth, immune development, and protecting infants from numerous diseases.

She recalled that exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months is one of the core recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Alarmingly low exclusive breastfeeding rates in Tunisia

The specialist revealed a concerning statistic: in Tunisia, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding does not exceed 17% among infants under six months.

This figure, significantly below international standards, highlights the urgent need to intensify efforts in education, support, and guidance for mothers.

    Strengthening awareness campaigns

In response to this situation, Nadia Hmida Hentati emphasised the importance of multiplying awareness campaigns in hospitals, basic health centres, and community spaces, while also reinforcing the training of healthcare professionals.

She added that promoting breastfeeding should become a national priority, given its proven medical, nutritional, and psychological benefits.

This regional event provided an opportunity to establish a clear assessment and call for collective mobilization to improve breastfeeding practices nationwide.
