Brigadier General Adwani: “Mahdia ranks 1st in terms of number of accidents”

Brigadier General Shams Al-Din Al-Adawani, Director of the Liaison Office of the National Observatory for Traffic Safety, told Tunisie Numérique that from the start of July until August 6, a decrease in traffic accidents by approximately 20% was registered compared to the same period in 2023.

The Brigadier General also registered a decline in the death rate by approximately 7% and a decrease in injuries by around 16%.

Concerning the causes of these accidents, Adawani confirmed that forgetfulness and lack of attention were the leading causes, accounting for 31.67% of casualties, 39.76% of accidents, and 33.86% of injuries. He clarified that these factors include fatigue, mobile phone use, and driving under the influence of alcohol. Speed ranked second, followed by failure to pay attention to pedestrians.

As for the distribution of accidents by area, the Brigadier General reported that Mahdia ranked first in the number of accidents, followed by Nabeul, then Tunisia, Sfax, and Gafsa. However, he explained that the state with the highest number of accidents does not necessarily have the highest number of deaths.

Regarding the most dangerous locations, he revealed that streets ranked first, followed by national roads and residential areas. Highways and beltways recorded the fewest accidents.

In the same context, he underlined the important number of motorcycle accidents, with 252 accidents recorded this year, resulting in 60 deaths.

Brigadier General Shams Al-Din Al-Adawani urged road users to exercise caution, avoid driving while tired, exhausted, or under the influence of alcohol, and consistently wear seat belts and helmets. He stressed that wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of death by 88%, according to his statements.
