Following a goalless draw in Pretoria during the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final, the return leg held moments ago in Cairo ended in a 1-1 stalemate between Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Both goals came with a distinct Egyptian touch: Taher Mohamed broke the deadlock for the home side in the 24th minute, only for his teammate Yasser Ibrahim to inadvertently level the score with an own goal in the 89th minute, handing Sundowns the equalizer.
Later in the evening, the other South Africa–Egypt semi-final clash between Orlando Pirates and Pyramids FC also ended in a goalless draw. Meanwhile, Al Ahly — record holders with 12 titles — saw their campaign for a sixth consecutive final come to an abrupt end.
Having already dispatched Tunisian giants Espérance in the quarter-finals, the “Brazilians of Africa” remain firmly are managed to reach their first final since their lone triumph in 2016.
