CAF deplores treatment of Nigerian team held in Libya

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed its strong condemnation of the mistreatment of the Nigerian national football team during their recent visit to Libya. In a statement on October 14, CAF criticized the “unacceptable and worrying” conditions endured by the Nigerian players and staff, who were held for more than 12 hours at a Libyan airport without necessities like food, water, or the ability to communicate.

The Nigerian Football Federation noted that the team, who were on their way to Libya for a game scheduled on October 15, was subjected to harsh and unacceptable conditions, leading them to declare that they could no longer partake in the match. CAF has referred the case to its Disciplinary Board for an in-depth inquiry to determine what led to the detention and to assign accountability. This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of national teams travelling within Africa for international competitions.
