As sugary drinks and alcoholic beverages become increasingly affordable, the diseases linked to their consumption are spreading at an alarming rate. Obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, certain cancers, as well as injuries related to violence and road accidents are on the rise—an alarming trend according to the World Health Organization, particularly among children and young adults.
In two global reports released recently, the UN health agency called on governments to significantly increase taxes on sugary and alcoholic beverages. The organization argues that current tax systems remain too weak, keeping harmful products cheap while healthcare systems face growing pressure from largely preventable diseases and injuries.
