China : 159 Missing Persons Found After Residential Complex Fire

Hong Kong police announced on Sunday that they had located 159 residents who had been reported missing after a massive fire swept through a residential complex in the Tai Po district in the north of the territory, confirming that all of them were safe.

At a press briefing, Tsang Shuk-yin, head of the injury investigation unit within the Hong Kong Police Force, said the death toll had risen to 146, while 79 others were injured as of 4 p.m. local time, according to China’s Xinhua news agency.

She added that 100 people remain unaccounted for, noting that authorities are currently unable to trace them due to incomplete information, the fact that some did not reside in the Wang Fuk Court complex where the fire broke out, or because their addresses are unknown.

Last Wednesday, Hong Kong’s Fire Services Department reported receiving alerts about a fire at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex, which consists of eight buildings and houses nearly 2,000 residential units.
