The Chinese Commerce Ministry said on Tuesday that it is banning the export of some dual-use goods and materials for military purposes in the United States. China will also “strictly control” the export of materials such as gallium, germanium, antimony, superhard materials, and graphite to the US. The announcement comes after the Biden administration tightened export restrictions of critical semiconductor equipment to 140 Chinese companies.
The Commerce Ministry accused the US of “politicizing and weaponizing” economic, trade and technological issues, abusing export control measures and undermining international trade rules, as well as attempting to “suppress and contain” Chinese businesses. “The Chinese government is determined to promote high-level opening-up and firmly opposes any erroneous practice of generalizing the concept of national security,” a ministry spokesperson said.
