While Mamelodi Sundowns had secured the African continent’s first ever victory in this new 32-club World Cup, Wydad Casablanca failed to repeat the feat and lost this Wednesday afternoon to giants Manchester City (2-0).
With Rayan Cherki and Tijjany Reijnders scoring their first goals under Pep Guardiola, the English side took the early lead after less than two minutes of play thanks to Foden (2′), then Doku made it three minutes before halftime (42′).
Beyond that, Wydad had several chances to score, and the result between City and Casablanca looks set to be quite different, as the crowd was likely expecting a score close to or similar to that of Bayern Munich’s 10-0 win over Auckland.
The other match in Group G will be the last on the schedule for this first matchday and will take place this Thursday morning (2:00 a.m. Tunisian time), between Italy’s Juventus and UAE’s Al Ain.
