Containing the flames in Tozeur: fire destroys 300 palm trees in the old oasis

A fire broke out on the evening of Monday, June 9, 2025, in the old oasis of Tozeur, causing significant damage in an abandoned agricultural area. According to statements by Habib Touzri, President of the Local Farmers’ Union, to the Tunis Afrique Presse agency, around 300 palm trees were affected, either completely or partially burned, over a total area of 2.5 hectares.

The blaze also consumed a large expanse of dry grass, which had been exacerbated by the summer climate. The fire spread within an abandoned farm belonging to the “El Wassat” Agricultural Development Group located in the old oasis.

Fire Contained Swiftly Thanks to Emergency Response

The fire was brought under control the same evening, thanks to the prompt intervention of civil protection teams and the presence of clear access routes, which facilitated the movement of firefighting trucks — except in some neglected areas where access remains difficult.

Enhanced Prevention Measures for the Summer Season

Habib Touzri emphasized that the Regional Union of Agriculture and Fisheries, along with its local branches and agricultural development groups, had launched awareness campaigns in recent weeks to minimize fire risks, especially during periods of intense heat.

He noted that these preventive efforts have resulted in a reduction in the number of fires recorded compared to the same period last year.

Urgent Need to Avoid Uncontrolled Burning

According to the official, setting fires for cleaning purposes remains the main cause of wildfires, particularly in the presence of dry grass and high temperatures. He stressed the importance of farmers refraining from burning agricultural waste, unless there is an available water source nearby.

To that end, the agricultural groups in the old oasis are currently working to install a permanent water point to supply firefighting vehicles quickly during emergencies.

Heightened Vigilance Required for the Months Ahead

As summer has only just begun, local agricultural authorities are calling for continued vigilance and stronger coordination with civil protection services to prevent future disasters. Maintaining agricultural plots, rehabilitating abandoned farms, and ensuring the availability of intervention infrastructure remain crucial elements in limiting damage and preserving the region’s oasian heritage.
