Controversy in French football following remarks on women’s football

Guy Roux, one of the most emblematic figures in French football, has sparked a major controversy after making remarks about women’s football, claiming that women are not suited to practising the sport.

According to the Spanish daily Marca, the former AJ Auxerre coach, now 87 years old, strongly criticised women’s football and its players.

In an interview with L’Est Éclair, Guy Roux stated:

“Women are made to give birth… football is not designed for them. Even the best female players do not have the same physical build as male players.”

    He added:

“I have great respect for young women who practise the sport they love, but if you ask me whether women’s matches are exciting, I would point you to top-division games played in front of 800 spectators.”

    Continuing his remarks, he said:

“I once met a European champion in the 100 metres. She admitted to me that, despite all her training, Bolt was always 12 to 14 metres ahead of her over that distance. Men and women are not the same; they are not made of the same stuff.”
