Denmark Opens Embassy in Tunis, Strengthens Ties with Tunisia

During an official visit to Copenhagen on Wednesday, Tunisian Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti met with his Danish counterpart, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, for talks focused on deepening bilateral relations between Tunisia and Denmark.

The meeting was marked by concrete commitments and a shared determination to build a structured partnership in areas of mutual interest.

A Bilateral Economic Commission in the Works

The two ministers agreed to establish a bilateral cooperation commission that will focus in particular on renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, healthcare, and the pharmaceutical industry—sectors in which Denmark holds advanced expertise.

The new body will be tasked with identifying tangible opportunities for collaboration, with the aim of expanding economic and technical exchanges between the two countries.

A Strong Signal: Danish Embassy to Open in Tunis in August

The Tunisian minister welcomed Denmark’s decision to open an embassy in Tunis as of August 2025, describing the move as “a strong signal of confidence in Tunisia’s regional role.” This long-anticipated diplomatic step reinforces a relationship that dates back to 1959.

Against the backdrop of a tense geopolitical climate, the two ministers emphasized their shared views on several regional and international issues, particularly as Denmark prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2025.

Mohamed Ali Nafti also reaffirmed Tunisia’s consistent support for the rights of the Palestinian people, strongly condemning Israeli violations—described as “genocide”—and reiterating Tunisia’s backing for the creation of an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Meeting with the Danish Parliament President

In parallel with the ministerial meeting, Tunisia’s top diplomat also held talks with Søren Gade Jensen, President of the Danish Parliament. Discussions focused on developing parliamentary relations, addressing shared regional challenges, and supporting Tunisia’s economic recovery through a spirit of transparency, good governance, and social justice.

Nafti also called for active support in recovering assets illicitly held abroad, stressing the need for European parliamentary backing to assist Tunisia’s reform and stabilization efforts.

The Mediterranean as a Zone of Peace

The minister used the occasion to highlight the importance of regional cooperation and the relevance of the Tunisian-Egyptian-Algerian initiative aimed at stabilizing Libya, which is seen as vital for the security of the entire region.

He also reaffirmed Tunisia’s commitment to making the Mediterranean a space for dialogue and peace—an objective strategically shared by Denmark.

This official visit underscores the growing momentum in Tunisian-Danish relations, now reinforced by concrete initiatives, a new diplomatic presence in Tunis, and a shared dynamic focused on innovation, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation.
