U.S. President Donald Trump is pressing ahead with his immigration crackdown. This weekend, he ended the temporary legal status of Ethiopian nationals living in the United States, a month after taking the same step for South Sudanese citizens. In the Trump administration’s view, Ethiopia no longer meets the requirements to qualify for this status.
Ethiopians who have been stripped of TPS now have 60 days to leave the United States. Until now, nearly 5,000 Ethiopians had benefited from the Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
This status is granted to people whose country of origin has experienced a natural disaster, an armed conflict, or an extraordinary event. It allows displaced people, in particular, to obtain a work permit and be protected from deportation.
Although the country had only just emerged from two years of war in Tigray, the northern Ethiopian region remains tense.
