Did Libya impose additional fees on imported goods? Libyan Ministry of Economy issues an important notice

In a statement released on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the Ministry of Economy and Trade of Libya clarified that recent social media rumours concerning the imposition of a consumption tax on imported goods are merely a proposal that has been studied based on requests from several national factory owners. This proposal is aimed at protecting Libyan industry and local products from the phenomenon of dumping.

The Ministry explained that this proposal has been forwarded to the Prime Minister’s office for review as part of the ongoing economic policy studies. Nevertheless, no official decision has been made regarding this matter. The Ministry stressed that the power to issue such a decision does not lie with the Minister of Economy and Trade but must go through the legal procedures and be enacted by law.

Furthermore, the Ministry categorically said that there is no current intention, in light of the ongoing situation in the country, to impose new taxes on imported goods. The Ministry urged citizens to rely on official sources for accurate information and to be cautious before spreading news, as per the statement.
