Domestic Gas Distribution Continues Normally Despite Planned Strike [Video]

In a statement to Tunisie Numérique on Friday, January 9, 2026, the President of the National Chamber of Domestic Gas Cylinder Distributors, Mohamed Mnif, confirmed that gas distribution operations are currently proceeding normally and under stable conditions.

Mnif explained that gas cylinder distributors are fully carrying out their duties, while filling centers are also making significant efforts to ensure a steady supply of domestic gas to distributors. He stressed that all stakeholders in the sector are currently mobilized to guarantee availability, especially as the country experiences a severe cold wave.

    Priority Given to Northwestern Regions

According to Mohamed Mnif, northwestern regions are being given priority in gas distribution due to harsh weather conditions, with the aim of reducing the impact of extreme cold on local populations.

He added that domestic gas will remain available throughout the weekend, while noting that distribution activities will be completely suspended on Monday, January 12, and Tuesday, January 13, 2026, due to a sector-wide strike by gas distributors.

    Strike Maintained After Inconclusive Talks

Regarding the planned strike, Mnif stated that a meeting was held at the Ministry of Industry with the Secretary of State for Industry and Energy. However, he described the meeting as unsuccessful, citing the existence of previously signed agreements and a joint decision issued in March 2022 that includes several measures deemed unworkable in practice.

He recalled that an agreement had been signed with the Ministers of Industry and Trade to establish a joint committee tasked with revising the disputed points. To date, no concrete steps have been taken in this direction.

    Outstanding Demands and Rising Costs

Mohamed Mnif expressed surprise that authorities requested once again a list of impractical measures, noting that this reflects a lack of understanding of the sector’s challenges even after nearly four years.

He also denounced the non-payment of increases in distribution allowances approved in previous years, despite a sharp rise in distribution costs. Mnif emphasized that gas cylinders are hazardous products requiring strict safety standards, which further increases operational expenses.

    Critical Situation for Agil Distributors

Finally, Mnif warned that no solutions have been found for distributors working with the National Petroleum Distribution Company, Agil, stating that many of them may be forced to cease operations as they are no longer able to continue under the current conditions.

The situation raises concerns over potential future disruptions in a vital sector, particularly as domestic gas demand remains high during the ongoing cold spell.
