DR Congo: Ebola Cases Surpass 8,000 for the First Time

The number of confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has surpassed 8,000 cases for the first time since the beginning of the ongoing outbreak, according to government data released on Monday, September 28, 2026.

The latest situation report issued by the Public Health Institute put the number of confirmed cases at 8,067, while the death toll reached 3,901.

Deadliest Ebola outbreak in the DRC

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, has become the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It has surpassed the impact of the outbreak that affected the country between 2018 and 2020, which was previously considered one of the most severe Ebola epidemics in the DRC.

West Africa outbreak remains the largest

Globally, the current outbreak in the DRC remains behind the Ebola epidemic that struck West Africa between 2014 and 2016.

That outbreak infected more than 28,600 people and claimed more than 11,000 lives in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
