Earthquake in Syria kills woman and injure of 25 people

An elderly woman tragically died from severe panic caused by an earthquake that hit the Salamiyah area in the eastern Hama countryside on Monday night. Additionally, about 25 individuals sustained minor wounds and panic attacks as they hurriedly evacuated their houses when the earthquake happened.

On Tuesday, August 13, 2024, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Brigadier General Khaled Al-Ammarin, director of the Salamiyah region, confirmed the elderly woman’s death in the village of Al-Riba in the northern Salamiyah countryside. The earthquake furthermore resulted in shattered window glass and caused cracks and other damage to buildings in the area.

Osama Melhem, director of Salamiyah National Hospital, noted that 25 individuals were brought to the hospital with wounds and bruises, which were sustained as they rushed out of their homes during the earthquake. Several others suffered from panic and nervous breakdowns. The injured received first aid and appropriate treatment.

Suhad Zidan, head of the Salamiyah City Council, added that the quake caused several injuries, including fractures, bruises, wounds, and panic attacks. It also led to damage in several homes, such as the detachment of stone cladding from buildings, the collapse and cracking of walls and reinforcements, and the breaking of window and door glass.
