Egypt: Mufti steps in to ban a viral TikTok challenge

A new viral trend circulating on social media has prompted a strong reaction from religious authorities in Egypt. In response to the spread of videos featuring so-called “burn challenges,” the Egyptian mufti, through Dar Al-Ifta, has intervened to ban this practice, describing it as highly dangerous and harmful to young people.

A viral challenge that puts lives at risk

Widely shared on TikTok under various names, the challenge involves pouring boiling water onto the skin of participants who hold hands as a sign of loyalty or friendship. The videos show young people enduring extreme pain in exchange for online visibility, exposing themselves to serious health risks, including severe burns and long-term injuries.

A ban rooted in religious principles

In his statement, the mufti stressed that any act involving self-harm or deliberate endangerment of the body is strictly forbidden in Islam. He emphasized that the pursuit of online fame can never justify behavior that may result in permanent damage or severe medical complications.
