Today, Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the General Union of Basic Education held a demonstration in front of the Ministry of Education in defence of the situation of graduates from the third class of the Applied Bachelor’s Degree in Education, especially the September 2024 class, according to Nabil El-Houachi, the union’s secretary-general.
In a statement to Tunisie Numérique, El-Houachi clarified that the Ministry of Education gave this cohort unusual and hybrid appointments that are not aligned with the law. The title “Agent Responsible for Teaching” was employed, whereas in the civil service law, a worker is either hired on a contract, temporarily, or as a trainee, each with its regulations regarding pay, discipline, and leave.
El-Houachi stressed that the appointments given to graduates of the Applied Bachelor’s Degree in Education have no legal basis and do not respect the law. According to the sectoral statutes for basic education, recruitment is either via an external competitive exam, a selection based on files, or direct recruitment, which is reserved for education graduates.
He additionally stressed that another reason for the protest is the lack of proper employment contracts that regulate the relationship between both parties and define rights and duties. He cautioned that the current situation of the teachers is extremely precarious, which is why they have taken to protesting.
