Energy: Tunisia’s Energy independence Rate Falls to 34%

In Tunisia, the primary energy balance showed a deficit of 3.8 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe) as of the end of July 2026, representing a 9% increase compared with the end of July 2025, when royalties are taken into account, according to the energy sector outlook report published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines.

The energy independence rate, which represents the ratio of primary energy resources to consumption, stood at 34% at the end of July 2026, compared with 37% at the end of July 2025.

Excluding royalties, the energy independence rate would have stood at just 27% at the end of July 2026, compared with 28% at the end of July 2025.

Primary energy resources stood at 1.9 Mtoe at the end of July 2026, down 6% from the same period a year earlier. “This decline was mainly due to a decrease in domestic crude oil and LPG production,” the Observatory explained.

Primary energy resources remain dominated by domestic oil and gas production, which together account for 71% of total primary energy resources.

The share of electricity generated from renewable sources—including STEG production, private-sector generation and self-generation—remains modest, accounting for just 5% of primary energy resources, according to the same report.

It is worth noting that royalties from the transit of Algerian gas fell by 21% at the end of July 2026 compared with the end of July 2025.

Natural gas demand remained broadly stable between the end of July 2025 and the end of July 2026, while demand for petroleum products increased by 6% over the same period. Meanwhile, electricity generation from renewable energy sources rose by 61%.

The structure of primary energy demand changed slightly. The share of petroleum product demand edged up from 48% to 49% between the end of July 2025 and the end of July 2026. By contrast, the share of natural gas declined from 51% at the end of July 2025 to 49% at the end of July 2026. Conversely, the share of primary electricity increased from 1% to 2% over the same period.
