EU approves €60M in aid to Lebanese military

The European Council revealed on Tuesday that it committed €60 million from the European Peace Facility to assist the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF). The funds will go toward enabling the military to maintain stability south of the Litani River in Lebanon following the ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese military organization Hezbollah.

“The assistance measure will also enhance the LAF’s operational capabilities and effectiveness to contribute to national and regional security and stability, thereby allowing displaced civilians on both sides to return to their homes,” the Council said. It added that the LAF’s return south of the Litani River is “crucial” to keeping the peace between Israel and Hezbollah, who are supposed to leave southern Lebanon, according to the terms of the ceasefire.
