In June 2026, solar energy generated a record 52 TWh of electricity across the EU, accounting for 25% of the bloc’s monthly output. This exceeded the previous monthly record set in May 2026, when solar power generated 47 TWh, representing 23% of total production.
Solar power was therefore the European Union’s leading source of electricity during the month, ahead of nuclear energy at 21%, gas at 15%, wind power at 14% and hydropower at 12%, while coal accounted for just 8% of generation.
This marked only the third month in which solar power became the EU’s largest source of electricity, following June 2025 and May 2026.
According to an analysis by Ember, solar power generation in the European Union increased by more than 20% annually between 2021 and 2025, making it the fastest-growing source of electricity over the period.
This expansion was mainly driven by the sustained pace of new installations, with 65.1 GW of additional capacity commissioned in 2025.
Since the beginning of 2026, 18 EU countries have recorded new monthly highs in the share of electricity generated from solar energy.
In Spain, solar power supplied more than one-third of the country’s electricity for the first time in June 2026, reaching a share of 34%.
In Germany, solar energy generated more than one-third of electricity for the first time in May, accounting for 33%, before rising to 36% in June.
In Poland, solar power accounted for nearly one-quarter of electricity generation in June, at 24%.
