France Launches a 10-Month Voluntary Military Service Program for Youth

France has announced the launch of a new voluntary military service program targeting young people aged between 18 and 25. The program will last ten months and offer a monthly allowance of around 800 euros. The first group of 3,000 volunteers is set to begin in September, with the aim of reaching 10,000 participants per year by 2030.

The initiative seeks to strengthen France’s defense capabilities amid growing geopolitical tensions, particularly in relation to the Russian threat, and in response to a shortage of operational soldiers. Volunteers will be assigned a wide range of missions, including assistance during natural disasters, counterterrorism surveillance, drone operations, and various technical and logistical tasks.

According to the Ministry of the Armed Forces, participants will have several options at the end of their service: returning to civilian life, joining the military reserve, or pursuing a full military career.

The cost of the program is estimated at 150 million euros in 2026, and approximately 2.3 billion euros over the 2026–2030 period, as part of a broader European effort to reinforce defense and security capabilities.
