One person has died, and another is in critical condition, after a man attacked them with a knife in Mulhouse, around 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, according to a police source.
A third person was wounded more lightly. The person attacked municipal police officers on the public highway, according to this police source. The two police officers were injured, one “in the carotid artery” and the other “in the thorax,” the prosecutor stated.
The individual was arrested and taken into custody. The prosecutor said that the man, of Algerian origin, aged 37, is listed in the FSPRT (File of alerts for the prevention of radicalization of a terrorist nature). The assailant shouted “Allah Akbar” while attempting to attack municipal police officers, the prosecutor said. A civilian who intervened was killed, and three municipal police officers “are reportedly injured,” adds the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office, which has opened a probe into “murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise” and “attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, on persons in positions of public authority.”
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is going to the scene in the evening.
Macron commented on the incident, calling it an Islamist terrorist attack.
