Former French surgeon Joël Le Scouarnec (74 years old) is set to appear in court on Monday, facing charges of sexual assault against 299 patients, most of whom were children.
According to French media reports on Saturday, Le Scouarnec’s trial will start on Monday at the Morbihan Criminal Court, located in the Brittany region (northwest France). The trial is considered “unprecedented” in the country and is anticipated to last for four months. The former surgeon is being prosecuted for aggravated sexual assault committed against 299 patients, mostly children, over his 30-year medical career.
If sentenced, Le Scouarnec could face up to 20 years in prison. The case came to light in April 2017 when his neighbours filed a complaint against him, accusing him of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old child. The following month (May 2017), he was arrested and later confessed to the assault.
During a search of his home, the police found over 300,000 pornographic images and videos, along with notebooks in which he documented the crimes he committed during medical examinations.
In 2020, Le Scouarnec was already convicted to 15 years in prison for sexually abusing his nieces, a patient, and a neighbour.
